I’ll never forget that day… It was during the big virus storm of 2011, and you couldn’twalk outside in cyberland without getting smacked in the hard drive with some kind of malware. It didn’t matter how you bundled up your computer with pc help and anti-virus programs… stuff wasflying at you left and right!

I had a major project due in two days, and mycomputer had gotten hit with something, and it got hit bad!  It had a temperature of 103, and was sneezing out error messages with every click of my mouse… My baby was having a difficult time processing those bits of code and was as sluggish as a drunk at 5 a.m. the morning after a night of having three drinks too many… ‘Couldn’t breathe… even turned blue and passed out now and then.  I tried everything, but…

That was IT, I had to callto get some PC help for my CPU!

I got on the phone with my computer’s HMO Warranty Tech Support to tell them that I needed a PC doctor fast!  After slogging through a slew of automated menus (which seemed determined  to keep me from speaking with a live person about getting some pc help), 7.9 minutes later, I had some non-quad-core-processor-powered voice on the line (and her name was Mary):

Tech Support: “Hello, this is Mary. How may I provide great service to you today?”

Me: “Mary- Thank God!  You’ve GOTTA give me some PC help!  My computer’s on life-support… I think it may be slipping into a coma, and I have a big presentation due in 2 days!”

Tech Support: “I’d behappy to help you.  Please give me the following information so that I can better assist you:  Computer Name, Model and Serial #”

Me: “Name?  I usually call it S.A.M., for my “Super Automated Machine!”  But right now I’m calling it my “P.O.S…”

Tech Support: “No sir, I meant, who made the computer?”

Me: “Oh, in that case, it’s a….”

Tech Support: “Thank you.  May I ask where you bought it, the date of purchase, and the invoice number on your warranty contract?”

Me: “Uhhhh, you may, but… I think I bought it in the spring- maybe April or maybe May- from that computer store down on Main Street.  And I can’t find that paper.  Can’t you just help me look it up?”

Tech Support: “Sorry, that’s a different department, sir.  Please hold while I connect you…”

Me: “But WAIT!  I just need some simple pc help so I…”

(It was too late- she was already gone!)

Me: “Mother [BEEEEEP]!”  (My young daughter was standing close by)

Did you just hang up on me?!!”

Note to Self: Computer Repair From a Monster-Sized Company Won’t Give You Good PC Help!

After another 17.2 minutes and more automated menus, I finally got through to another support person.  They had me doing lots of stuff, most of which didn’t work, but instead made my computer sicker.  One hour and 22 minutes later, I realized I was just wasting my time and hung up!  No pc help or doctoring for me from this big company who promised to provide me “excellent support!”

Out of frustration, I called my friend, Joe, who (after laughing out loud!) told me I should call
